Book Review & Giveaway ~ Snowfall at Moonglow by Deborah Garner

My Thoughts & Review  A personal and/or virtual assistant can help you check items off your to-do list. Delegate some tasks to us today.

I just returned from an afternoon spent at the Timberton Hotel in Montana. Well, not really, but that is one of my favorite things about a good book, it takes you away from reality for a little while. Mist, Betty and the rest of the gang are doing great.

This is the 5th story in Deborah Garner’s Moonglow Christmas novella series. It is a heart-warming story set at Christmastime that shows the importance of simple kindness & caring is to people. I’ve read and reviewed all of them, and they are all similar yet quite different. I look forward to them each year, reading it ushers in the Christmas season for me. Continue reading

Book Review & Giveaway ~ Nutcracker Sweets at Moonglow by Deborah Garner

My Thoughts & Review A personal and/or virtual assistant can help you check items off your to-do list. Delegate some tasks to us today.

I always enjoy my annual visit to the Timberton Hotel, I enjoy catching up with old friends (that I met in the previous books). Reading these short novellas always helps me get in the Christmas spirit. I also love that she includes recipes that are mentioned in the story. This year I plan to make, Glazed Cinnamon Nuts, Peanut Butter Fudge & Lemon Crinkles ? You can read my reviews of the previous books in the series here.

This year Betty and Mist are expecting more than the guests actually in the reservation book … they will have guests from the local theater group as well. After a tragic fire burned down the theater, the a few of the dancers performing “The Nutcracker” need to find a place to stay. In addition to the actors and their regulars, we meet a young family whose daughter, Maria, is in a wheelchair, and an elderly woman, Olga, who has a bit of a mysterious air about her.

As usual, Mist has a wonderful Christmas Eve dinner planned, along with a special surprise …

If you love feel good, happy endings kind of stories, do yourself a favor and read this one … you’ll be glad you did!

5 Stars and 2 Thumbs Up ?

Silver Bells at Moonglow, The Moonglow Series, Book 2

Christmas at the Timberton Hotel arrives each year with a unique set of guests, some returning, some new. Book Review & Giveaway ~ Gingerbread At Moonglow by Deborah Garner

My Thoughts & Review A personal and/or virtual assistant can help you check items off your to-do list. Delegate some tasks to us today.

This is the 3rd installment of the Moonglow Christmas themed novellas. Deborah Garner always does a wonderful job of developing her characters, it almost feels like they are real people, at a real hotel, in a real town, in Montana. It is a heart-warming story set at Christmastime that shows how important simple kindness & caring is to people. Mist certainly has a gift for making the guests at the Timberton Hotel feel welcome & special.

Sometimes the Holiday season can get so hectic that you forget what Christmas should be about. It’s not about shopping for numerous gifts, attending countless parties and extravagant decorations, but about the simple joys in life. Slowing down and taking time to spend with a dear friend – taking a walk in the snow or building a snowman with your kids – stealing a kiss under the mistletoe – baking some cookies from your grandma’s recipe that brings back fond memories of times spent with her … or maybe trying a new recipe from this book ?

This book helped put me in the Christmas spirit. It is a feel-good story with no violence – just people being kind to one another, and I loved just loved it. Definitely 5 stars and 2 thumbs up ~ can’t wait to read the next one ?

Book Review & Giveaway ~ Halloween is Murder by Carolyn Arnold

                                  My Thoughts & Review A personal and/or virtual assistant can help you check items off your to-do list. Delegate some tasks to us today.

I have read several of Carolyn Arnold’s books, mostly in the Brandon Fisher series, but this is my first in the McKinley Mysteries series. Since I have thoroughly enjoyed her other books, I had no doubt I would like this one … I was correct ?

While this series is very different from the BF series, I enjoyed that is was a fun, cozy who-done-it without intense descriptions of gruesome crime scenes.  Halloween is Murder involves a TV reporter that is found dead shortly after taping a segment about a Haunted House. The interview was with the owners of the haunted house, who just happen to be private investigators. I love to try to solve the mystery along the way as clues are interspersed through the chapters. This one took an unexpected turn right near the end, but totally made sense. I also liked the playful chemistry between Sean and Sara, and how well they worked together as a team in their professional as well as in their personal lives.

This is a fun, easy read to help get you in the Halloween spirit !

NEW RELEASE…

Beware of all that goes bump in the night…

Sean and Sara McKinley are excited about the haunted house they’ve set up as a Halloween charity fund-raiser, but things take a ghoulish turn when the reporter covering their story is found dead. With the media keeping mum about how she died, Sara’s curiosity is piqued, and she convinces Sean to take on the investigation through their PI firm.

But this case is not without its challenges. The police are actively investigating it, as well, and it’s not even clear that the woman was murdered. It will take a little cloak-and-dagger, dress-up, and finesse for the McKinleys to get to the bottom of it, but they aren’t the kind to give up.

As they troll for leads and work through the skeletons in the reporter’s closet, they unearth a few suspects, but they’ll need to carve out the whole truth if they’re going to find her killer. If they do so fast enough, there might even be time for a little trick-or-treating.

When a billionaire leaves them all his money, they no longer have to work, but they find themselves sticking to what they’re good at—solving murders. Book Review & Giveaway ~ City of Gold by Carolyn Arnold

My Thoughts & Review A personal and/or virtual assistant can help you check items off your to-do list. Delegate some tasks to us today.

City of Gold is the first book in the new Matthew Conner Adventure series. Matthew (an archeologist), Robyn (a museum curator) & Cal (a travel photographer) are friends and form a team of treasure hunters. They are thrill seekers to the extreme, and seem to thrive in dangerous situations. This trip has very  high stakes, their friend Sophie is being held hostage until they produce the treasures from the fabled city of Paititi. Is it even real? Or just a legend? They have a lot riding on it being real.

I have read and enjoyed Carolyn Arnold’s Brandon Fisher FBI series, so I suspected that this new series would not let me down – I was correct. She does in depth research for all her stories. She pays attention to each & every detail. Whenever I pick up one of her books, I know I will learn something, as well as, be entertained. Her characters and their relationships are well thought out and developed.

This story is fast paced and action packed, the author’s descriptions are so vivid. At times, I felt my adrenaline pumping  as if I was actually part of the team searching for the lost city.

If you like action, adventure, archeology or history, you will love this book. I am (im)patiently looking forward to book 2 ?

Finding the Inca’s lost City of Gold would be the discovery of a lifetime. But failing could mean her death…

Archaeologist Matthew Connor and his friends Cal and Robyn are finally home after a dangerous retrieval expedition in India. While they succeeded in obtaining the priceless Pandu artifact they sought, it almost cost them their lives. Still, Matthew is ready for the next adventure. Yet when new intel surfaces indicating the possible location of the legendary City of Gold, Matthew is hesitant to embark on the quest.

Not only is the evidence questionable but it means looking for the lost city of Paititi far away from where other explorers have concentrated their efforts. As appealing as making the discovery would be, it’s just too risky. But when Cal’s girlfriend, Sophie, is abducted by Matthew’s old nemesis who is dead-set on acquiring the Pandu statue, Matthew may be forced into action. Saving Sophie’s life means either breaking into the Royal Ontario Museum to steal the relic or offering up something no one in his or her right mind can refuse–the City of Gold.

Now Matthew and his two closest friends have to find a city and a treasure that have been lost for centuries. And they only have seven days to do it. As they race against the clock, they quickly discover that the streets they seek aren’t actually paved with gold, but with blood.

Book Review & Giveaway ~ Just Three Dates by David Burnett

My Thoughts & Review A personal and/or virtual assistant can help you check items off your to-do list. Delegate some tasks to us today.

Just Three Dates is a heartwarming story of matchmaking by a couple of meddling mothers. They get together and start commiserating that their grown children are not married and giving them grandchildren. They aren’t even dating or trying to find someone to share their life with.
Mark has had his heart crushed by a very serious (he was ready to propose) past relationship. He is a math professor at the local college. He is quite fulfilled with his career and has no intention of allowing anyone to ever hurt him again.
Karen has had several relationships end because of trust issues. Her boyfriends were dishonest and lied to her repeatedly. In her mind, she would never trust a man again. She has thrown herself into her work as a curator at the local art museum.
Their mothers, however had other plans. They believe that their kids would make the perfect couple. They somehow finagle Mark & Karen to meet and go on “just three dates” to see that they are meant to be together.
The rest is, as they say, history …
This was a G rated romantic comedy, it would be perfect to be made into a Hallmark movie ?
I give this book 2 Thumbs Up and 5 Stars !!

A personal and/or virtual assistant can help you check items off your to-do list. Delegate some tasks to us today.NEW RELEASE…

When their mothers become matchmakers, entangling them in a series of dates with each other, Karen and Mark must each decide whether to entertain the idea of a “marriage of convenience,” or to hold out for an increasingly unlikely marriage based on love.

Since breaking with her last boyfriend, Karen has refused to trust any man her age. For the past three years, she has not dated the same one twice, and only one in ten has received even a goodnight kiss as she turned him away. Karen is an artist. She follows her feelings, lives in a cluttered loft, and gushes over vivid sunsets.

Mark still dreams about his almost-fiancée, and his date book has been empty since he threw her out a week before he’d planned to ask for her hand. His friends call him the “Ice Man,” since he seldom smiles, especially at a woman. A math professor at the College, logic guides his behavior, he loves order, and an elegant proof is a thing of beauty.

Both Karen and Mark have all but abandoned hope of ever falling in love, and, left on their own, these opposites would never attract. So, their mothers become matchmakers, entangling them in a series of dates by extracting promises that Karen and Mark will go out together three times, suggesting that, in the absence of love, a “marriage of convenience” is a live option.

If you enjoy heartwarming stories based on true-to-life behaviors, with complicated relationships and a less-than-certain outcome, this book is for you.

Book Review & Giveaway ~ A Flair for Drama by Deborah Garner

~~~~~ My Thoughts & Review ~~~~~
Sadie Kramer is a slightly eccentric, self-proclaimed sleuth, and somehow, mysteries just seem to fall into her lap. Sadie runs a successful and busy boutique shop in San Francisco with her assistant, Amber. She loves her little Yorkie Coco, fashion, wine, chocolate, and to travel.
In Flair for Drama, Sadie and traveling companion, Coco are invited to see a community theater play and get a backstage tour from her old friend, Roxy. It seemed like it would be a perfect chance for a little getaway to the Monterey Bay area.
She arrives at the theater, with Coco tucked safely away in her tote bag, to watch the dress rehearsal. At intermission, Roxy gives them a backstage tour. Roxy needs Sadie’s help with something and suggests that she leave Coco in a dressing room while she helps. The task took longer than expected and the second act had started. Sadie was concerned when she returned to the dressing room to find the door ajar and Coco missing. Then she heard the audience laughing and discovered that her little dog had wandered on stage and in a nutshell, stolen the show.
Thankfully, Sadie & Roxy were able to smooth it over with the director. Everything was on track for a successful opening night until the lead actress is found dead on the stage. Sadie and Coco are now entwined in murder mystery. Sadie, as usual, is intrigued and does her own investigating.
Deborah Garner is gifted at bringing each character to life. She adds details seamlessly, making it seem like you know these people. She presents scenarios that have you thinking you know who did it, and then in the next sentence you are second guessing yourself. And that is to say, this is a great “who done it” … it gets 2 thumbs up from me 🙂
NEW RELEASE….
When a former schoolmate invites flamboyant senior sleuth Sadie Kramer to a theatre production, she jumps at the excuse to visit the Monterey Bay area for a weekend. With quaint Carmel shops a short drive away and luxurious linens in her hotel accommodations, the excursion promises to be both entertaining and relaxing.
Plenty of action is expected on stage, but when the show’s leading lady turns up dead, Sadie finds herself faced with more than one drama to follow. With both cast members and production crew as potential suspects, will Sadie and her sidekick Yorkie, Coco, be able to solve the case?
Book Review & Giveaway ~ Remnants by Carolyn Arnold
~ ~~ My Thoughts & Review ~~~
Remnants by Carolyn Arnold
If you love crime shows like Criminal Minds and identify as a crime show junkie like me, you will love this Brandon Fisher FBI series. Remnants is the 6th book in the series, but really is a standalone story (I haven’t read the first 5 … yet).
Brandon and his team from the FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit are called to Savannah, GA to help the local PD solve their latest case involving severed human body parts from multiple victims. The hands and feet have been removed from the legs and arms that have been found so far (is the killer keeping them as trophies? ~or~ simply removing them so they can’t be identified via fingerprints?). Then they find a torso painted blue, with the heart missing. Could this serial killer be following an ancient sacrificial ritual with roots based in the ancient cultures of Mexico?
Carolyn Arnold makes the reader feel like part of the team as they track down every lead to solve this horrifying case. You feel like you know each of her characters.
If you love psychological mysteries / who done-its … this is the book for you. I highly recommend it and can’t wait to jump into the other books in this series (and her other series). 2 Thumbs Up and 5 Stars ?
I received this book to review through Beck Valley Books Book Tours, all the opinions above are 100% my own.
When multiple body parts are recovered from the Little Ogeechee River in Savannah, Georgia, local law enforcement calls in FBI agent and profiler Brandon Fisher and his team to investigate. But with the remains pointing to three separate victims, this isn’t proving to be an open-and-shut case.
With no quick means of identifying the victims, building a profile of this serial killer is proving more challenging than usual. How is the killer picking these victims? Why are their limbs being severed and bodies mutilated? And what is it about them that is triggering this killer to murder?
The questions compound as the body count continues to rise, and when a torso painted blue and missing its heart is found, the case takes an even darker turn. But this is only the beginning, and these new leads draw the FBI into a creepy psychological nightmare. One thing is clear, though: the killing isn’t going to stop until they figure it all out. And they are running out of time…
Book Review & Giveaway ~ Hutchins Creek Cache by Deborah Garner
~~~ My Thoughts & Review ~~~

Paige Mackenzie is a reporter for the Manhattan Post. Her next assignment will take her to Colorado, not too far from her boyfriend, Jake in Wyoming. She plans to make it a ½ work trip – ½ romantic getaway when Jake agrees to meet her in Hutchins Creek, CO.

The assignment Paige is working on revolves around the history of the railroad and the Old West. Sounds simple, but nothing is simple when Paige is involved … trouble just seems to find her. She has a naturally curious personality, which makes her a good investigator / researcher for her writing assignments. Her friendly and outgoing nature puts people at ease. They are comfortable sharing info with her, helping her to put all the facts together to solve the mystery. The mystery in this case revolves around an old train car named “The Morning Star” and an unsolved gold coin robbery at the Denver Mint from nearly a century ago. Will Paige solve it? You’ll have to read it to find out for yourself 🙂

Deborah Garner is a great story teller. Because of the detailed research she puts into her books, I always learn new things. She describes her settings so that you almost feel like you are there too. You feel like you are with Paige as she talks to people and does the research for her article.

I really enjoyed this book, and look forward to more Paige Mackenzie mysteries 🙂

Book Review & Giveaway ~ The Goodbye Year by Kaira Rouda

~ My Thoughts and Review ~

Kaira Rouda artfully weaves together the lives and stories of several families facing a time of major change to their lives. The Goodbye Year takes place in well-to-do Crystal Beach, California. It all begins at the welcome back to school meeting for parents. Their kids are starting their senior year of high school. All the parents are beginning to feel the effects of the upcoming “empty nest syndrome”. Unfortunately, this major life change happens to coincide with mid-life crisis’s for these families.

We meet each family in alternating chapters. We get to know their challenges and issues through the eyes of the parents, as well as, their teenagers. Each person shares their point of view of the situations as they unfold and intertwine with each other.

It always amazes me, to learn what goes on behind closed doors. People put on a fake persona to the world, one that seems like they have it all together and can handle everything that life throws at them, but in reality, they are barely hanging on.

The Goodbye Year is full of drama, as you can well imagine, centering on hormonal teenagers, peri-menopausal mothers and mid-life crisis fathers going through a major change to life as they know it.

I really enjoyed this book, and I believe you will too 🙂

Melanie, a perfectionist mom who views the approaching end of parenting as a type of death, can’t believe she has only one more year to live vicariously through her slacker senior son, Dane. Gorgeous mom Sarah has just begun to realize that her only daughter, Ashley, has been serving as a stand-in for her traveling husband, and the thought of her daughter leaving for college is cracking the carefully cultivated façade of her life. Will and his wife are fine—as long as he follows the instructions on the family calendar and is sure to keep secret his whole other life with Lauren, the woman he turns to for fun (and who also happens to have a daughter in the senior class).

Told from the points of view of both the parents and the kids, The Goodbye Year explores high school peer pressure, what it’s like for young people to face the unknown of life after high school, and how a transition that should be the beginning of a couple’s second act together—empty nesting—might possibly be the end.

“Rouda deftly examines the difficult transition parents and their children face as they prepare for the end of one life and the beginning of another. Her latest is a compelling story and a thoughtful examination of the nature of change and the importance of working to accept it.” ―Booklist

 “The Goodbye Year is an often hilarious, sometimes heartbreaking, always engaging look at the last year before high school seniors leave their families for good. I devoured it!” -Meg Mitchell Moore, author of The Admissions, So Far Away, and The Arrivals

 “The family dramas and dynamics are things that we can all relate to…”
-Redbook magazine, “20 Best Books to Read Come Spring”

 “Kaira Rouda channels Peyton Place meets The Real Housewives of Orange County with her newest book, The Goodbye Year.” ―Working Mother magazine
